How many of you always end up with a bunch of wilted spring onions in your fridge because you were using too little? I do. Getting a bundle from the local supermarket costs me S$0.70 but I usually use only a stalk or two. The rest goes into the bin after a few days.

I've tried growing my own, with shallots/small onions. However, when the spring onion grows taller each day, they couldn't withstand the wind. So I experimented with big red onions.
Use sprouted onions for potting, they grow faster.
I used to grow with shallots and it give me small green onion. Will try on big onion like yours one. Thanks for the tip!
ReplyDeleteA few months ago, one of those big yellow onions I bought sprouted, so I helped my younger child potted it...I managed to harvest a couple of times, but after a while, the bulb rotted, probably over watering and eventually the planted died. my younger child was so sad.
ReplyDeleteActually... there's no need to bury the bulbs. Just 'poke' the onion slightly onto the soil and it'll be good enough. Let the base be touching the soil.
ReplyDeleteTry this method for keeping spring onion fresh. It works! http://wendyinkk.blogspot.sg/2012/03/how-to-keep-spring-onion-for-days-or.html
ReplyDeleteI grow spring onions this way too !!
ReplyDeleteVivian,
ReplyDeleteSmall onions will grow thin spring onions.
HHB,
I had the same prob too. After harvesting it a few times, the spring onions aint as green as before and I had to dig out the bulb and grow new ones.
Wendy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your tip. I saw your entry in your blog but this pic was taken before you updated. Anyway, I'm not growing spring onion now ever since I found your tip on how to store them in the fridge ;-)
Fong's Kitchen,
Yes, I've seen her entry and have been doing that too :)
Joyce,
ReplyDeleteThis is so easy, right?
